Do I have to be gay to join Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay? No. Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay has one of the highest percentages of straight members of all Log Cabin Republican chapters. We welcome everyone to join Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay or attend our meetings.
Do I have to be a registered Republican to join? Yes. Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay is a chartered organization by the Republican Party of Florida. As a result, the rules state that only registered Republicans may join.
What are the meetings like? Generally, we meet and have dinner during the meeting. Dinner is selected from the menu at the restaurant and you are responsible for your bill. There is no fee to Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay to attend. During the dinner, the meeting is conducted in a social type atmosphere. We don't follow Robert's Rules of Order to keep it more social except during voting, nominations or other business which requires proper procedure be followed.
Are there guest speakers? We do our best to have someone speak to the group. It doesn't always happen, but we try. Guest speakers are announced via an emailed meeting announcement about a week before the meeting.
What is your relationship like with the Republican candidates, elected officials and party officials? Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay has an excellent relationship with most of the local party officials. Local party officers frequently attend our meetings. Many candidates reach out to Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay but some don't and those are the ones we contact in an effort to build a bridge of communication. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we don't. But we try.
There are so many campaigns, how do you get involved with all of them? We don't. We can't. We all have personal and professional lives outside of our political involvement. What we do is encourage our members to get involved with the candidates of their choice and let the candidate know "I am a member of Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay" so that they know we're here and involved.
Do you endorse candidates? No. As we said, we encourage the members to support the candidates of their choice, both in volunteer efforts and financially. In addition, Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay does not take a position on the presidential election. As a grass roots organization, local elections are the focus of our efforts. The national Log Cabin Republicans office handles the presidential election.
I support your organization but I don't want to join. What can I do? One of the best ways to help Log Cabin Republicans of Tampa Bay is to donate to our group. We operate on a small budget and like any organization, we do have costs to operate.
