Mrs. Annie Lindsay
Nocatee, Florida

My dear Mrs. Lindsay,
It is with the deepest sympathy and regret that I write to you on behalf of myself and Jack's shipmates concerning the circumstances of the death of your brother.
Our ship was lost about 2:30 p.m. on September 25, 1944 as a result of enemy action, believed to be a German mine, near the port of LeHavre, France.
At the time of the explosion, Jack was performing his duties with the highest degree of loyalty and efficiency, and it is believed he met instantaneous death since he was in the immediate vicinity of the explosion. He is buried at the U. S. Army Cemetery, St. Andre, France, a hero in the eyes of all of us,
and a fit companion for the brave seamen of years gone by who fought and died for their country and for the rights of all free men.
Jack was a fine and upstanding man, admired and respected by all of us, and he will always be remembered as a capable, efficient and trustworthy member of the crew of the U. S. S. Miantonomah.        His death is a loss to both his country and the Naval Service.
His personnel effects, I am sorry to say, were lost with the ship with no chance of recovery. All our prayers are with you in your great bereavement, and I hope it will be a consolation to you to know that by Jack's death, in action and in the line of duty, he valiantly and loyally made the supreme sacrifice for his country and for the greater security of those left behind.
Do not hesitate to call upon me for any further information concerning your brother as we of the Miantonomah who are left feel that he will always be one of our shipmates.

Faithfully,

Austin E. Rowe, Commander, USNR
Commanding, U. S. S. Miantonomah.

General Del. [Lake Alfred, Fl.]

*The word, Nocatee had been scratched out on the front of the envelope, and Lake Alfred had been written down next to the word General Delivery.

 Dear Mrs. Annie Mae Lindsay,

Well although its been sometime since you wrote my son asking about your brother. Well I gathered up what I could from time to time while he was here on his leave from the hospital, so I'll try to tell you what I got.:
My son and L. P. and a Lake boy seem to have had their liberty at the same time, and Jack had his at a different day. His job on the ship was second loader of a gun just the same as Perry's. Well it seems, it takes three boys to get and keep shells for one man and one gun. They reached the battle field June 6, 1944 at 8:00. They were in the third wave or what we call the third bunch of ships to go in battle, and Perry said his job was to pull tanks off the ship and on barges to send ashore, and he said out of 220 they loaded that day, only 5 got ashore. They were carrying cargo for General Patton's army so in the third trip they were hit with something and had to go back to England and stay in dry dock two weeks for ship repairs. They had crossed the English Channel fifteen times and the last trip they were loaded with gasoline, which they finished unloading on Sunday. They had orders to pull out of port early Sunday morning, and the mine sweeps had not been real close in port, so Perry said the water had been real rough and probably the mine had washed in with the tide. The first they heard was a radio call. Perry said
he had just gotten off watch and they thought at first it was a German U- boat then they got three other calls and all were ordered to put on there life rafts. They all had been ordered to sleep top deck that night just in case, so the next he knew he was just coming to, he jumped over board and stayed in the water for 45 minutes before they were picked up in the life boats.
He said the last he knew Jack was on top deck when the orders were given but the shock knocked some over-board, some unconscious and some were scalded when they hit the air after leaving the boiler room where they fell dead. He said L. P. worked in the boiler room and he believed that was what
happened, although he said orders had been given in time. They thought for everyone to clear out but he said he was scared stiff. He was really in the water before he knew it himself or before he came to. The boat sank within 15 minutes after it struck the mine. They thought they were in La Havre, France
at the time.
The last reports he had there were 65 saved. He thought the Germans had been there June 4 and 5, 1944 waiting for the invasion to take place said there were scores of them lined up for the invasion. They worked day and night under flying metal and fire and shell every time they went in to unload, and they really seen a lot of danger for any of them to come back alive.
I don't know what they will do with Perry, he is awful nervous and his left arm is smaller than the right. The Dr. here said it was caused from a nerve, but I was glad he got back even in that condition for they went through a lot - I know.
Perry said he went out to a little town one after noon with Jack to shop some, and they didn't have any coupons, so they only walked around for awhile, then went back to the ship. This is not much about your brother but I thought maybe you would understand that most all the boys did the same things on the boat. This doesn't seem much to tell you for it seemed strange or something that this is all I could get out of Perry, about the whole trip or their work over there.
So we'll just have to believe everything happens for the best, whether we see it that way or not. Perry is back in the hospital and he doesn't know just yet what they're going to do with him. He says he'll ask for shore duty for at his present condition that's all he feels able to do.
If when he comes here again if you want you can come and talk to him your welcome to come.

Miantonomah

A variant spelling of Miantonomah (q.v.) [Transcriber's Note: Miantonomah was a leader of the Narrangansett Indians, and nephew of the Narrangansett chief, Canonicus.]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CMc-5: dp. 2,870; l. 292'; b. 48'7"; dr. 16'6"; s. 14k.; cpl. 202; a. 2 4", 4 mg., 1 dct.)

Miantonomah (CMc-5) was built as SS Quaker by Pusey & Jones Corp., Wilmington, Del., in 1938 and during the next three years operated along the eastern seaboard as a fast inland water passenger and freight carrier. She was acquired by the Navy from her owner, Philadelphia & Norfolk Steamship Co., at Boston 5 May 1941; renamed Miantonomah 14 May 1941; converted for Navy use as a coastal minelayer by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Co., East Boston, Mass.; and commissioned at Boston 13 November 1941, Lt. Comdr. Raymond D. Edwards in command.

After completing conversion and following shakedown, Miantonomah steamed to the Virginia Capes where on 11 January 1942 she began laying her first minefield with Monadnock (CMc-4). Operating out of Yorktown, Va., she joined in the effort to reduce the German submarine menace along the east coast, and during the next several months, sowed mines off Cape Hatteras and Key West. In addition, defensive mining operations sent her to the southern reaches of the Caribbean off Trinidad. Reclassified CM-10 on 15 May 1942, she continued duty with Mine Division 50 and in October completed preparations for overseas combat duty.

Loaded with a full cargo of mines, Miantonomah departed Yorktown 23 October and the next day joined the Center Attack Group (TG 34.9) Of the Western Naval Task Force. Heavy seas forced the minelayer out of the convoy south of the Azores 4 November; escorted by Raven (AM-55), she rejoined the task force 7 November as ships approached to launch a three-pronged invasion of French Morocco.

Miantonomah arrived off Fedala late on the 7th and, because of her cargo, remained clear of the transport area. Following the predawn amphibious landings and the subsequent neutralization of shore batteries by intense accurate naval gunfire, she laid down a defensive minefield north and east of the transport area about noon 8 November, thence anchored in Fedala Harbor. She remained at Fedala during the next few days and escaped damage from 2 German submarine attacks on 11 and 12 November, although three torpedoes on the 11th passed within 25 to 75 yards of her. These attacks by U-173 and U-130 sank four U.S. ships and damaged two others.

Between 12 and 15 November she steamed in convoy to Casablanca. After loading mines from Terror (CM-5), she joined Monadnock and Terror and on the 16th extended the Fedala minefield along the Moroccan coast to Casablanca. The next morning she departed Casablanca and sailed with other ships of TG 34.9 for the United States. Heavy seas pounded her badly but she arrived in Yorktown 30 November.

Miantonomah underwent repairs at Norfolk between 8 December and 19 January 1943, then resumed duty out of Yorktown in Chesapeake Bay and along the Virginia coast. She operated out of Boston between 9 April and 25 May and returned to Yorktown 29 May to prepare for minelayer operations in the Caribbean. She departed 14 June, reached Trinidad the 20th, and later in the month sowed mines to protect the approaches to that important American base. She returned to the Chesapeake 28 July and operated out of Yorktown during the next 9 months. On 29 April she sailed to Bayonne, NJ.; thence, as a unit of TG 27.1, she departed Gravesend Bay, NJ., 5 May to support the Allied invasion of Europe.

Miantonomah arrived in Bristol, England, 16 May and began duty with the 12th Fleet. She operated out of Bristol until D-Day, 6 June, when she steamed via Cardiff to Plymouth. She continued dispatch and escort duties in British waters until arriving off Grandcamp, France, on 25 June. There she embarked Rear Adm. John Wilkes and became flagship for CTF 125. She steamed to Cherbourg 9 July and on the 18th Admiral Wilkes hauled down his flag prior to Miantonomah's departure to England.

Arriving Plymouth later that day Miantonomah returned to Cherbourg the 20th carrying supplies for port clearance operations. For more than 2 months she made runs between English and liberated French ports and provided valuable support for salvage and clearing operations. On 21 September she carried port clearance supplies from Cherbourg to Le Havre which was liberated by sea and land less than 2 weeks before.

Miantonomah sailed early in the afternoon of the 25th. Because of the danger of enemy mines, her skipper, Comdr. Austin E. Rowe, ordered "the highest state of water-tight integrity to be set and all personnel not actually on watch below to be on topside and wear lifejackets" - measures which undoubtedly saved many lives. With a French harbor pilot at the com, she skillfully navigated the inner and outer harbors and cleared the block ships, thence made course for the entrance to the marked channel. As she steamed about 2000 yards out from the block ships, she was rocked at 1415 by a tremendous underwater explosion under the engine room. This blast possibly followed by a second one, dazed or injured practically the entire crew. Immediately, the stricken ship began to sink rapidly by the stern and to starboard.

Damage control efforts proved useless, and as Coast Guard vessels, British motor launches, and a French fishing craft stood by to rescue survivors, her injured skipper ordered Miantonomah to be abandoned. She sank about 20 minutes after the explosion with a loss of some 58 officers and men.

Miantonomah received two battle stars for World War II service.

Notes for ROBERT ROY MERCER:

BRADENTON HERALD
May 17th, 1935
Roy Mercer, 32 of Elwood Park died last night at 10 o'clock from gas poisoning, as the result of inhaling gas for several minutes early that morning, while working in a silo at the Griffin and Clark dairy at Elwood Park.
Mr. Mercer with other men were engaged in filling the silo with green corn, and he was inside, and for greater convenience in his work, he closed both doors. In a few minutes he felt ill, and was released by fellow workmen, but remained on the job, trying to work until about noon, when he went home.
In the evening several physicians were called, and he was removed to the county hospital, his condition gradually becoming worse, until death ensued.
The gas is identified as "marsh" gas, and affects the lungs, the gas being caused by the fermentation of the green corn in the silo.
Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Mercer of Elwood Park, Mr. Mercer is survived by six brothers, Alec, Arcadia; Kib and Sammy, Elwood Park; Charles, Myakka City; Adam, Samoset; and Mick Mercer, Olustra.

Funeral arrangements, in charge of Wakeman's, have not been completed.
