John W. Mercer was born in 1818 in Winchester, Virginia and came to Florida in
1830. It is believed that he was born in England, and emigrated to Canada, and from there
to Pennsylvania. He died sometime between 1864 and 1870. He married Sarah A. (-------)
Mercer, who was born about 1827, although one source indicates she was born in 1820, in
the state of Georgia. The 1860 Hillsborough Census indicates that she was a widow. She
died 22 June 1897 at the age of 77 years.
Others living in their household were:

According to the U.S. Census 1850, 1860 Hillsborough County, Florida:
John W. Mercer, was born in 1818 in Winchester, Virginia and came to Florida in 1830.
It is believed that he was born in England, and emigrated to Canada, and from there to
Pennsylvania. He died sometime between 1864 and 1870. He married Sarah Ann Summerall
Mercer, who was born about 1827, although one source indicates she was born in 1820, in
the State of Georgia. The 1860 census indicates that she was a widow. She died June 22,
1897 at the age of 77 years.
According to another source:
John W. Mercer, the 1850 census shows that John, Sr., was born in England but a 1953
Tampa Tribune Article quotes J. W. Mercer (John's son) who states that he was from
Winchester, Virginia. A biographical Census of Hillsborough County in 1850, compiled by
Julius S. Gordon in 1898, also suggests that he may have been born in Winchester,
Virginia. (Note: a map study of this area shows a number of communities with the same name
as several of his children, is it possible that he selected these convenient names for his
children?). John married Sarah Ann Surnmeralls, in Ware County, Georgia in 1838. John W.
Mercer, Sr. & Sarah Mercer separated about 1863. Do not know if they were legally
divorced or not. In later years, Sarah claims that they were not. John W. Mercer married
again on Oct 8, 1863 to Juliette B. Balleen in Mercer County, Illinois. His second wife
later states that she thought his first wife was dead. John W. Mercer, Sr. died Aug 7,
1892 at Shelbyville, Missouri.

Hi, Matthew:
The Jacob Raulerson you listed in the Florida Marriages is brother to my own
g-g-grandfather: John Baggs Raulerson. My question: I have only two children listed for
Jacob and Sarah: Martha b Abt. 1857, and Eliza b Abt. 1858/59. Do you have anything else on
these ladies? And, what happened to Sarah? Did she die, or did they divorce?
Would appreciate any information you are willing to send, and will gladly share what I
have.

Matt:
I have the following on Jacob and Sarah. It reads like it came from PIONEERS OF
WIREGRASS, but I failed to note the reference, and can't find it in my collection.
MAYBE it came from LaMartin. According to this, Jacob and Sarah were divorced...? Do you
know if Sarah remarried? "Jacob Raulerson born 1829 was the son of Noel and Eleanor
Baggs Raulerson. He moved with his family to Florida around 1829. Jacob is shown living in
Hillsborough County, Florida in the 1860 census with his wife, Sarah Mercer, and two
daughters. He married Sarah 8 Aug 1855 in Hillsborough County. He evidently divorced Sarah
as she remarried and he is shown in Clinch County, Georgia with his wife Mary Raulerson
born 1847 in Hillsborough County, Florida, daughter of Rabun Raulerson, Sr. and Tempie
Whidden Raulerson. They are shown on the 1860 Columbia County, Florida census. Jacob
Raulerson died 6 Jun 1886 and Mary Raulerson died 17 May 1887. They are buried in Deep
Creek Advent Cemetery better known as Scott Cemetery located on 441 north of Lake
City."
Shirley Turner Shiver
Jackson RAULERSON was born 1829
in Lowndes County, Georgia the son of Nichabod RAULERSON
and Lucretia Margaret (SLOAN) RAULERSON. He was killed
in the Battle of Sharpesburg, (Antietam) Maryland,
17 September, 1864 during the Civil War. He married
Sarah Ann MERCER 9 August 1855 in Hillsborough
County Florida. She was born in 1841 in Florida.
The U. S. Census of 1860 list the
following children:
Martha RAULERSON born in 1857 in Florida.
Eliza RAULERSON born in 1859 in Florida.
He enlisted in Capt. Francis M. DURRANCE'S company of Florida
Mounted Volunteers during the Third Seminole Indian War serving
from 29 December 1855 to December 1857. During the Civil
War he enlisted in Company B, 5th Florida Infantry, Capt Garrett VANZANT,
Commander. He was a Private on enlistment, but was shortly promoted to 3rd.

I was so surprised to find the marriage listing
by you of my grandmother, Belle Zora Robinson Buchanan to Mr. John Mercer. I was in DeSoto

would have to go to Wauchula, Hardee County for that information and I did and they didn't

as far as any SUMMERAL's being related to us. I've seen no marriage records of any
SUMMMERAL's marrying any MERCER's in the State of Florida or Georgia. I do have my John
MERCER marrying your Belle Z. Buchanan in DeSoto Co., FL, February 17, 1912.
If I can help please let me know!
This is all I have from her side as of right now. I'm a Mercer from my

Dear Matthew:
Thank you for your reply. I need nothing on my
grandmother just was
wondering what you had. This is the first time I have been in touch
with anyone connected to Mr. Mercer and I am very pleased. Have been to
the cemetery where Mr. Mercer and Sara and several other Mercers and
their relatives are buried in Sweetwater. It was very interesting. Can
you tell me anything about Mr. Mercer's death?

JOHN R. ROBINSON, BELLE ZORA's father,
was born in Tennessee in 1827 and
her oldest brother was their only child born in GA in 1854.
Matthew, since you had the information you did I
assumed that you were
like me and wanted all the information you could get but wanted it
correct if possible, so the reason for this information to you. In some
of my work the collateral lines go on and on and if I can get more I
take it and put it in where it goes no matter how far out it is. Just
feel like there is no such thing as "too much" information, do you?
Again, thank you.
Joan

Subject: Jonathan COKER and Beulah PRINE
Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2000 20:42:45 EDT
Laura Ann Coker b. Feb l8, l859 to Jonathan Coker and Mary Serene Hicks Coker. She is a
older sister of Jonathan Coker married to Beulah Prine. I do not have a date of death or
burial place for Laura or Charles. I do have a list of their children if you need it.
Are you just going backwards with your research? The group that I'm working with are
going backwards and forwards. If you have a list of Jonathan and Beulah Prine descendants
it sure would help. We have someone working on Laura and Charles now, so maybe it won't be
long before we have that info.
Thanks Ann

Notes for ROBERT ROY MERCER:
Roy Mercer, 32 of
Elwood Park died last night at 10 o'clock from gas poisoning, as the result of inhaling
gas for several minutes early that morning, while working in a silo at the Griffin and
Clark dairy at Elwood Park.
Mr. Mercer with other men were engaged in filling the silo
with green corn, and he was inside, and for greater convenience in his work, he closed
both doors. In a few minutes he felt ill, and was released by fellow workmen, but remained
on the job, trying to work until about noon, when he went home.
In the evening several physicians were called, and he was
removed to the county hospital, his condition gradually becoming worse, until death
ensued.
The gas is identified as "marsh" gas, and affects
the lungs, the gas being caused by the fermentation of the green corn in the silo.
Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Mercer of Elwood
Park, Mr. Mercer is survived by six brothers, Alec, Arcadia; Kib and Sammy, Elwood Park;
Charles, Myakka City; Adam, Samoset; and Mick Mercer, Olustra.
Funeral arrangements, in charge of Wakeman's, have not been
completed.
