Mrs. Sarah E. Browning

Mrs. Sarah Ellen Browning,

longtime resident of Arcadia,

died last Friday at Arcadia Gen-

eral Hospital.

Mrs. Browning was a native of

Illinois, born March 20, 1883, in

Cairo, and came to Arcadia 28

years ago. She was a member of

the Church of God and had taken

an active part in its affairs.

She is survived by two sons,

Charlie Lindsay, Nocatee, and

Jessie Lindsay, Arcadia; three

daughters, Mrs. Julia Gay, Villa

Ridge, Illinois, Mrs. Lola Ellis,

Cairo, and Mrs. Helen Crews, Ar-

cadia; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Inna

Albritton, Arcadia. Several grand

and great grandchildren also

survive.

Funeral services were conducted

last Saturday from Arcadia Church

of God with Rev. Carl W. Bryan

officiating. Burial was in Joshua

Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Carl

Adamson, Henry Eggerton, Emile

Kipp, Herman Glockner, Pete

Craft and Roy Bellflower.

Robarts Funeral Home was in

charge of arrangements.

HAVEN MAN, TINY SON DROWN AFTER BOAT CATCHES FIRE

WINTER HAVEN----A 53-year old Winter Haven man and his three-year-old son

drowned here Monday afternoon when a boat they were fishing in suddenly

caught fire and they jumped overboard to escape the blaze.

Two other children escaped death when one remained in the blazing boat

and another swam ashore.

The bodies of Jessie Lindsay and his young son Billie Joe Lindsay, were re-

moved from Lake Blue by Winter Haven firemen at approximately 8:30 o'clock

Monday night.

The disaster occurred about 2:45 P.M. Monday as Lindsay and three of his

sons were fishing in Lake Blue, a Winter Haven lake lying just to the south of

Havendale Boulevard near 36th Street.

Wolf said Lindsay apparently tried to refuel the boat while the motor was

still running.

THE BOAT was hit by a flash fire and Lindsay and his three-year-old son im-

mediately jumped overboard.

Lindsay's two other son's, John, 8, and Richard, 9, remained in the boat,

witnesses said, with John later swimming safely to shore.

Fire departments from Auburndale and Lake Alfred were called to assist the

Winter Haven Fire Department.

Wolf said recovery of the bodies took place almost simultaneously --- about

8:30 Monday night.

The Winter Haven fire chief said that some ten boats were used in the re-

covery.

Firemen eventually used grappling hooks to recover the father and his small

son.

LINDSAY WAS a lift operator at Cypress Gardens Citrus Products and had

been employed by the firm since 1954. He worked in the fresh fruit packing

house of the firm.

The Winter Haven Fire Department reported that one of the sons who sur-

vived the tragedy finally managed to bring the fire under control.

Lindsay lived with his family at 3615 Ave. T, NW, only several blocks from

the scene of the tragedy.

Mrs. Lois Elizabeth Frye Lindsay, 60, of Route 3, Dunn,

who has a number of survivors in Johnston County, died

Saturday in Johnston Memorial Hospital following a long

illness.

A native of Harnett County, she was born November 24,

1923, the daughter of the late Daniel Hinton and Nany

Manning Frye.

The funeral was held at 3 p.m. Monday at Pleasant

Grove Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Ted Bryant

Officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were by Erwin Funeral Home.

Surviving are three sons, Jimmy Lindsay and Johnny

Lindsay of Four Oaks and Richard Lindsay of Pine

Level; two half brothers, James Frye of Tallahassee,

Fla. and Eugene Frye of Raleigh; a sister, Ruth Bryant

of Erwin; two half sisters, Lela Mae Thompson and

Gladys Lee of Four Oaks; and two grandchildren.

Robert "Bob" Charles McCullagh was born on April. 28, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Chicago and attended Chicago schools.

Bob served in the United States Army during WWII. After being discharged from the army, "Bob" travelled to Florida on a vacation where he

met his future wife, Sarah Ellen Thelma Mae Crews while she was a clerk in McCrory's Five and Ten Cent Store in November of 1946.

Thelma Mae found out her name on her Birth Certificate was Sarah Ellen when she had to apply for a birth certificate to draw Social Security

but had always thought her name was Thelma Mae. Thelma was born in Nocatee, Florida on May 13, 1928. She is the daughter of Byron Walton

Crews, Sr. and Helen Hazel Lindsay. Thelma attended Nocatee and Arcadia schools.

Bob asked Thelma to marry him on the third day after he met her. They were married on October 1, 1947 in Arcadia, Florida.

Bob and Thelma lived for a time in Arcadia where Bob was employed at G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital while he attended school to become

an aviation mechanic. They went on vacation to Chicago. The doctor in Chicago would not allow Thelma to return to Florida until after the birth

of their son, Robert Berton McCullagh on Dec. 10, 1948. After returning to Florida, the couple moved to Miami, Florida where Bob worked as

an aviation mechanic for 14 years. He then became a deputy sheriff for six years. Thelma was employed at Jackson Memorial Hospital for 13

years and at Palm Springs Hospital in Hialeah for eleven years while the couple lived in Miami.

The McCullagh's moved backed to Arcadia about 1977. Bob was employed as an insurance agent for Peninsular, Liberty National, American

Heritage Insurance Companies since that time. Thelma was employed at DeSoto Memorial Hospital for twenty years and retired from that

position.

Bob and Thelma presently reside in Arcadia, Florida.

Robert "Bobby" Berton McCullagh married Mary Ellen McNair in Miami, Florida Abt 1968. Two children were born to Bobby and Mary Ellen.

James was employed for sixteen years at the Copeland Dairy Farm, and managed the dairy for his in-laws. In 1974 James and his family moved to Humansville, Mo. where he owned and operated his own farm. The Crews' moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in 1981, James worked for American Trailers while they were there. In 1991 American Trailers closed it's plant and James and Marianne moved to Sand Springs, Oklahoma. James now works for Superior Hard-Surfacing Company, Tulsa, Oklahoma where he is the Tool Room Manager.

Marianne's early years were spent in Tampa, Florida . She moved when about twelve years of age with her parents to Punta Gorda, Florida and to Arcadia, Florida at age sixteen. Marianne graduated from Desoto County High School in 1958. She received an AA Degree from South Florida Junior College in 1970, and a BA in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from The University of South Florida in 1974. She has taken graduate courses from Southwest Missouri State University, Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma and from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma. Marianne has been employed as a teacher since 1974 and is presently teaching First Grade at Anderson Elementary School in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. She has recently written a book, "Anderson School - The First One Hundred Years".

James was Baptized and became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church on March 23,1961. Marianne was Baptized at Hillsborough Methodist church at age eleven. James and Marianne are presently members of Mannford United Methodist Church, Mannford Oklahoma and have been active church members in all the communities where they have lived. James taught a third grade Sunday School Class for nine years at Trinity United Methodist and a junior high class at both Humansville and St. Mark's United Methodist Churches. He also served on the church board at Trinity, Humansville United Methodist, Humansville, Mo. and St. Mark's United Methodist, Bethany, Oklahoma. Marianne taught Nursery and Kindergarten Classes at Trinity and has also served on the board at Trinity, Humansville and First United Methodist Church in Sand Springs, Oklahoma.

"Jim Crews" was born June 4, 1959 in Arcadia, Florida, He married Mahshid Sadafi, born May 8, 1952, Tehran, Iran, on March 1, 1986 in Richardson, Texas. They have one daughter, Sara, born January 16, 1987. The family resides at 2332 Regal Rd., Plano, Texas, 29412. Jim graduated from Humansville High School in 1977. He attended The University of Missouri-Columbia, and Southwest Missouri State University. He also attended Richardson Community College and is employed as a Network Technical Engineer at M.C.I. Mahshid received a degree in Psychology from The University of Tehran and Certification in Early Childhood Education from The University of Colorado. She works for Plano Public Schools .

"Rick" and Barb Crews reside at 407 North Mary, Humansville, Mo., 65674. Rick was born on July 22, 1960 in Arcadia, Florida He graduated from Humansville High School in 1979. Rick is employed by Missouri State Road Department and operates a small engine shop. Barb was born on September 10 1963 in Muscatine, Iowa. She also graduated from Humansville High School in 1982. She is presently working on a Degree in Nursing. The couple were married at Humansville United Methodist Church on June 21, 1986. They have two children, Lacey Nicole, born September 10, 1987 and Levi Nathaniel born July 13, 1992. The family are members of Humansville United Methodist Church.

Lila Anne and husband, Garry McDevitt reside with daughter Deidra Faye, born December 14, 1994, at 2805 S Maple Drive, Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Lila was born on July 21, 1962 in Arcadia, Florida. She graduated from Humansville High School in 1980. Garry was born on June 15, 1962 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Webster High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1980. Garry then attended Oklahoma Baptist University where he received a B. A. in Theology in 1992 and a Master's in Marital and Family Therapy in 1997. Garry is the Minister at First Baptist Church in Prue, Oklahoma. He was employed at Fibercast, Inc. for a number of years as a Draftsman. Lila works part-time. Lila and Garry were married at Redforks Baptist Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 1, 1982.

She graduated from Putnam City High School in 1982 and received a degree in Accounting from Langston University in 1993 . She works as a C.P.A. Scott was born on November 21, 1962 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Scott graduated from Bixby High School in 1981. He attended Oklahoma State

University and received a BS in Agricultural Engineering in 1985. He got a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering in 1986. Scott is an Engineer with the Army Corps of Engineers. The couple were married on November 4, 1995 at Sheridan Roads Baptist Church, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Scott and Jeannine are members of Bixby United

Methodist Church . Scott serves on the church board. The couple also taught a children's Sunday School class.

Jessie Lindsay was born and raised in Arcadia, FL.(DeSoto Co.) in 1937. He

was the oldest of three boys. His brother's Harry and Louis were always fighting and competing with Jessie, from the time they were children through most of their adulthood, at least until they quit speaking to each other.

Their mother and father divorced on Sept. 19, 1950 which was less then one month before Jessie's 13th birthday. He entered the Navy in 1955 to pursue a field in aviation leaving Arcadia far behind. He was also married the same year to Thelma Murphy in Myakka City, FL. by the Rev. S. L. Albritton.

This would be the first of five more marriages to follow. Jessie married Thelma while she was pregnant with another man's child. Jessica was Jessie's first born, born May 2, 1957 to Thelma. They were divorced after only four years of marriage. Jessie had been living in Miami working as an air traffic

controller where he met Wilma Weiss who was only 17 yrs. old. This was around Feb. 1 1960. The two were wed on Feb. 15 1960 only two weeks after they met. This marriage bore 5 children. The last two births were very traumatic. Mark Adam was born with severe birth defects, while David Wayne

died after living only a day, being born premature.

Jessie came back to Arcadia, FL. around March of 1995 after living in Tennessee for about 15 years. He brought his wife Debbie and a Chihuahua with him from Tennessee. Now he resides in Georgia.

Mr. and Mrs. Elton Murphy of Wauchula announce the

The ceremony was performed by Rev. Sidney Albritton

at 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon last Sunday in the Myakka

City Baptist Church. Miss Ann Bowen was the maid of

honor, and Jimmy Turner served as the best man.

Mrs. Lindsay is a junior in Hardee County High School,

and plans on completing her education while her husband

is in the Navy.

Mr. Lindsay attended DeSoto County High School, and

entered the Navy in July of this year.

Jessie married her while she was pregnant with another mans child.
