SEARCH ENGINES

The web has many good general search engines to help genealogists find families. The more common search enignes include:

  • Google - Generally regarded as the best search engine, this is a super resource for surname searches, especially when the word Family follows the surname. You can also find people using the images tab. I found a cousin in Alabama that way, searching for images of cousins with a particular surname.
  • Altavista
  • Yahoo! - Also check out YahooGroups for surname lists and chatrooms.
  • Infoseek
  • HotBot
  • WebCrawler
  • Excite

Using Search Engines

Use the search engines above to search for family names, family home pages, people with the same last name and information about localities:

  • To find out all the people in phone books with the last name being researched, also try Yahoo People Search formerly known as Four11.
  • Searches can be conducted for names, addresses, and even email addresses using this search engine.
  • To find maps of localities, use Map Quest
  • To find listservs containing genealogy information, try Yahoo!
  • Some of the new metasearch engines find even more than the millions of pages indexed by the above search engines. Dogpile is a good example of a metasearch engine. It is especially good for name searches.
