GOVERNMENT RECORDS
Our federal, state and local governments keep many records that are of value
to the genealogical researcher. Follow the green links to learn more about each type of government
record listed below.
Census Records
The United States has taken a general census of the population every 10 years since 1790 and
these records are searchable on microfilm. Some states also have taken state censuses in intervening years.
Property Records and Maps
Government surveyors have platted our landscape since the days of George Washington. The transfer
of property records, and maps of who lived where can help locate where and when an ancestor lived.
Military Records
The U.S. Military keeps good records of it's Armed Forces, and many other countries do also.
